The Fish Issue

July/August 2016

Our personal favorite of our early issues. Fish galore! In every style and every color! We love the variety in these pages. This issue introduces Bethann Garramon Merkle, who is now a regular contributor.

40 full-color pages of beauty and life.

The target audience for each magazine is children ages 2-8, or children who are being read to and/or are just learning to read—but because children are never far from their siblings and caregivers, we created a magazine that can be enjoyed by all ages, from 1 to 100.

  • Jeremy Charbonneau is a graphic designer and illustrator from Seattle, WA. He is allergic to many pets, but he used to have a beta fish named Butterfly. His favorite crayon of all time is red-orange.
  • Miles Debas is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. He, or more appropriately—I, am an admirer of barns, birds and professional basketball. Follow me on Instagram @me_miles.
  • Amanda Ferris lives in Melbourne, Australia. She teaches Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga and explores inner space.
  • David Gregal, Jr. lives in Washington, DC. At the end of the day, he loves reading books with his wife and two kids before bedtime.
  • Krisanne Hastings is a writer and art educator who lives in small town Utah with her husband and two baby boys. She loves tumbling in the play teepee with her crew, reading beautiful picture books, and teaching her toddler to paint like the great masters.
  • Ruth Hofheimer is a public artist who loves transforming spaces with large-scale installations. She lives in Brooklyn, NY and has a dog named Mickey.
  • Erin Hüber is an artist living in Indiana. When she’s not telling stories through cut paper and illustrations, she’s making apple pies and enjoying quiet time with her children.
  • Lida Larina lives in Russia. Every day Lida walks her best friend—her black dog named Babai. After their walk, Lida draws the sleeping Babai.
  • Sabrina Lee lives in New York City with her husband and two rescue cats. Most days you’ll find her creating in the kitchen, dreaming of country living, playing feline entertainer to Miu Miu and Misha, or simply living life one drawing at a time.
  • Charles Alexandre Lesueur was a French naturalist, artist, and explorer. He lived from 1778 to 1846 and traveled the world painting and collecting pieces of nature that many people had never before seen.
  • Courtney Mandryk is one of the makers of this magazine. She loves to draw, run along the river by her house, and listen to her two young children make up games and stories and worlds together.
  • Raymond McDaniel is from the sea. Far, far from the sea, alas.
  • Bethann Garramon Merkle lives in Wyoming, where she cooks, gardens, hunts, hikes with her puppy Brio, and hangs out with scientists like her husband. As a writer and illustrator, Bethann best enjoys telling stories about nature and the scientists that study it.
  • Marianne Moore (1887-1982) was a famous poet who lived in and around Philadelphia. Her most famous poem is called, fittingly, “Poetry.”
  • Rumi was a 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic.
  • Natalie Sopinka lives in Canada and loves fish. She is a scientist who studies baby salmon, writes poems about halibut, and creates tuna out of paint chips.
  • Christine Hartzler Woodruff is one of the makers of this magazine. She lives in Seattle with her husband and two boys. On her desk is a barnacle, a rock that looks like Pluto, and a piece of white sea glass that she found on Alki beach.
